Academics Middle School
The PACE West Middle School Program provides services to students in grades six, seven and eight. There are currently five middle school classrooms. The preferred ratio at middle school is seven to eight students per class with a teacher and teacher assistant.
Middle school students have an established homeroom teacher who serves as their case manager. They change classes each period on a modified block schedule, receiving 90 minutes of instruction in Language Arts and Math.
Students in the program are provided educational services in accordance with their IEPs. The Prince William County Public Schools curriculum is used throughout the program. Students participate in standardized testing (including VA SOL Testing) as outlined in their IEPs.
Remedial instruction is provided to students who are below grade level in reading and math. Students who did not pass their SOL tests will receive additional remediation in reading and/or math as part of their exploratory arts schedule.
The focus of the classroom is to develop academic skills, while working with the student to develop appropriate behaviors and the social skills necessary to be successful in school and in the community. Teachers work closely with the School Psychologist and School Social Workers to implement programs within the classroom to assist students to function more successfully in the classroom environment.
